Batu Lanchang Food Court (Part 1): Good Foods Abundance! Another Combo Lunch For Less Than RM10!

There is a lot of food courts scattered all around Penang. In each and every food court, there is bound to have some great food in it...provided you know where to find, hehe

I went to Batu Lanchang food court for lunch a few days ago. From word of mouth and locals, I was told that a few foods stand out among the rest, such as Penang char koay teow, pesembur, Chinese crullers, chicken rice, Nyonya kuih, ABC and cendol just to name a few.

I started of my lunch with ‘kai pei’/ chicken drumstick-char siew-siew yuk rice (RM6), followed by some snacks (Chinese crullers, RM1.80) and ended with a bowl of cendol (RM2) here. Total, RM9.80 only!

Hainan Chicken Rice @ Batu Lanchang Food Court

My food arrived less than 5 minutes, talk about fast food here. Fragrant chicken rice with a plate with all my favorite chicken, char siew and siew yuk
Close up photo of the main dish. The siew yuk was still crunchy on the top skin layer, meaning well fried and freshly roasted too. The char siew, although I asked for ‘pun fei sau/ half lean, half fat’, they still give me lean meat. Anyway, it tasted nice but could be nicer if the preparation for this char siew include a thin layer of honey too. How about the ‘kai pei’/ chicken dumstick? Soft tender meat, flavorful, juicy meat. Nice
The boss preparing the sweet dough before frying it.
End products: Chinese crullers/ fried Chinese bread/ deep fried pastry. Can be eaten alone or together with porridge or bak kut teh.
‘Yau char kwai’, two long sweet dough fried till golden brown. This is the basic type with no ingredient inside but the sweet dough itself. Nice, but I’d eaten better ones elsewhere.
My 'ham chim peng' and 'ma keok'
‘Ham chim peng’/ Chinese ‘doughnut’ with red bean paste inside. Eat it while it’s still hot, from the crisp outer layer to the inner sweet and soft middle part.

‘Ma keok’, sweet dough with sesame seeds. Nothing in this thick middle fried sweet dough. No point eating beyond the outer layer with sesame seed because the dough in the middle is thick and not as sweet as the outer layer

Cendol from Store 22
My cendol with ‘snow-like’ fine ice and just a ‘teaspoon’ of red bean. The boss is really stingy on the ingredients. No satisfaction!

The ice melted fast and yet the coconut milk and palm sugar syrup is no where to be seen or at best, minimal amount. I actually asked the boss to fill it up with more coconut milk and he reluctantly obliged

More to come…when I tried the Nyonya kuih, Penang char koay teow and pesembur next time...
