The Worst Restaurant In The Garden, Mid Valley City: Alexis Kitchen & Bar? Two-Thumbs Down...

Hm..it's been awhile since I blogged about some expensive eateries. I wonder why? Perhaps I was devastated and disappointed with Antipodean (Breakfast @ Antipodean Cafe, Bangsar, KL: Good At Overpricing Foods, Best For Nothing!)? Anyway, I'd been trying out a few highly recommended eateries lately. Which one I tried? How was it? How is the ending?!

Alexis Kitchen & Bar, The Garden @ Mid Valley City. When we first entered Alexis, a waiter asked us, 'Smoking or non-smoking?' HELLO!! You're not allowed to smoke here! I think The Garden must look into this, so is the Government too! It's against the law to smoke in an enclosed public area, HELLO!!! Not a good start.
Let's start with the first one, Alexis Kitchen & Bar (also known as Bistro & Wine Bar) in The Garden @ Mid Valley City.

Table setting, acceptable. Perhaps the waiters here don't know how to place the plate and cutlery if not because of this paper pictorial instructions? That's mean of me, sorry, just too irritated with...(still not in good mood yet)

The Menu. The choices are aplenty. Stopped looking for single digit number. The only single digit you can find in the menu is the govt tax, hahaha. Come whatever price also...I'm prepared! I have high expectation wey!
Hmm, where are the people? Bad sign? Table arrangements are a little messy. And what's with the numerous energy wasting light bulbs? YOOHOO!!! Go green? Never heard of it? Pardon me and forget about this statement if Alexis light bulbs are indeed energy conserving instead. I honestly didn't check the light bulbs individually myself:)
Perhaps, all the blinding bright light bulbs are there to prevent guests to see what's above. Seen here are all the conducting tubes, wiring, steel rods hanging right and others above the ceiling. Hope no 'Final Destination' events will happen here. Hmm...did the interior designer quit half way? Not acceptable!!
Kitchen appeared neat from the outside but...is that the chef? His assistance? He's so young?! Is there any experience chef inside the kitchen? I hope so.
Alexis's Kerabu Fried Rice; with tumeric chicken, green mango salad, salted fish  and sambal belachan (RM25).
Closer look at the Kerabu Fried Rice.  Notice anything wrong?
How was it? Firstly, nasi kerabu fried rice? I'd eaten nasi kerabu made from tumeric rice or even plain white rice but,,,fried!? And did the chef even know that nasi kerabu is usually in blue color, which is naturally acquired by cooking the rice with petals from bunga kembang telang? Anyway, nothing to shout about the fried rice also, since not even any strands or shred of egg was seen in the fried rice, plus fried shallots amount is next to none. Egg too expensive? Utter rubbish rice! How about the salty fish on top? It appears that was just cut and directly placed on it. Lazy bum! Next, the keropok is slightly 'lemau'/ 'masuk angin' or soften already. So, giving me more of the keropok so you can finish your old stocks is not a good way to impress me! Sambal belachan? Even roadside makciks selling nasi lemak can make better sambal belachan. I can taste some raw chili still and the belachan taste is non-existence. How about the green mango salad stated in the menu then? Can you see any salad spreads here? The few strands of mango here taste not sour, but bitter! And cucumber? Too lazy too peel off the outer layers?
How about the tumeric chicken? This is the example of the fried chicken with the middle part missing. Nevermind, but tumeric taste? Zero, not even some salty taste. How many pieces of chicken? 3-4 pieces of this crap!
Slow Roasted Duck Magret; served with petit orange & fennel salad (RM45)
Another closer shot of my slow roasted duck magret with my fennel salad. Let's talk about the salad here. Hm..how do I comment on something that's not cooked? Preparation-wise? Messy. Suitability? Not matching at all with the slow roasted duck magret. Petit orange? Sourish, cheap orange. I'll stop here.
Now, let explained further if you still haven't notice it yet! Do you know what's the red in color? BLOOD, damn! And how do I know it? The taste of the duck, still raw, LOOKS RAW, TASTE RAW! Does it look roasted to you? The chef must be really impatient. The menu stated 'slow roasted' and it's neither slow or roasted!!! You think you're cooking steak is it? Bloody hell! The duck outer layer have no taste at all and from the sogginess texture, it's NOT FREAKING ROASTED, ok?! How can you serve your guest with a plate full of DUCK BLOOD??? How much I'm paying again?  RM45, HELLO!!!

  1. Gordon Ramsay would have threw the whole plate at the chef for giving him salmonella poisoning with raw duck meat lol

  2. It is a delight to read your food reviews, dear blogger! Honest and truthful opinion, rather than those bloggers that mislead people with photoshoped pictures and flowery language.

Reading your review makes me upcar already and keep up the good work in pointing out 'to-be-avoided' outlets!

  3. i think you ordered nasi goreng kerabu, which is not the same as nasi kerabu.. nasi goreng kerabu is nasi goreng with the leaves/veges common in nasi kerabu (i.e. lemon grass etc.).. if you go to a malay restaurant and order nasi goreng kerabu, you will get the same thing.. i'm not a fan of alexis (other than their pavlova), but i just felt the need to clarify this to you

  4. Nasi goreng kerabu isn't blue because it isn't nasi kerabu. Nasi kerabu is the Terengganu/ Kelantanese dish with blue rice served with condiments. Nasi goreng kerabu originated from Thailand and is fried dry accompanied by the condiments you mentioned above. And sambal is eaten with nasi lemak, not sambal belacan.

  5. Oh and sambal belacan IS made from raw chilli. It isn't cooked. Perhaps that's why it tasted of raw chilli?

  6. Food at Alexis Gardens can be hit and miss. That's why if I have to eat there (due to the fact that I spend a lot of time at Mid Valley for work) the set lunch deals are usually the best value. But the burger almost never disappoints.

Keep up the good work Macha, but do some further research into the restaurant smoking regulations etc as well as different food preparation types, especially the details.

  7. tried their duck too. sucks to the max. we were shocked too when it came with blood. should have just asked them to cook it again. definitely my first and last time (eating a raw duck and dining in alexis). was there to celebrate hubby's bday. bought a komugi cake to bring there and the manager wanted to charge me rm40 for bringing the cake into the restaurant (!!!) corkage fee i can accept la but rm40 was just crazy (just coz alexis sells cakes). banned alexis since then.

  8. Back in those days, they were one of my fav places to dine. Their beef noodles was the best and the pavlova was their signature dish. I guess they have gone downwards and probably the kitchen crews are no longer locals.
The duck is unacceptable. It should have been steamed quarter cooked and kept till required to use. When ordered, the skin was supposed to be grilled till crispy and then placed in the oven for another 10 minutes. In total the guest should wait at least 25 minutes for the perfect slow roasted duck. I guess the guest will not complaint if the order came out late as it is SLOW ROASTED DUCK... hehehehe...
    Thats my thoughts on it...
