Taiping is famous for being the wettest town in Malaysia. It’s presumed to be raining until otherwise. Unfortunately, the rain always happened in the evening and not in when you need it most in the hot, scorching afternoon. You can also see old men sitting down in the evening and looking at the sky. What are they doing? They’re betting on when the first drop of rain will fall:)
Taiping also have the most beautiful lake garden (nicer than Penang Botanical Garden) in Malaysia, a cooling Maxwell Hill and a zoo too. So, if you happened to be in Taiping for a visit, go to the following place that I’m introducing to you for a fulfilling lunch! Opened by husband-wife team, pleasant couple and respectful to customers.
Kedai Kopi Kok Beng, easy to find, located near the end of Jalan Kota, Taiping town. |
Look for Kok Beng coffee shop along Jalan Kota, Taiping. It’s easy to find this shop because there are only 3 main roads in Taiping town. Go there early because I went late that day and the famous char siew had been sold out. So, I just ordered chicken rice.

My chicken rice (RM4.50), generous amount of chicken and sauce |
Comes together with chicken-based soup and ‘must’ eat, one-of-the-kind, spicy chili paste. |
Soup. One bowl not enough:) |
Chili paste. One plate not enough:) |
Close up photos of the chicken serving. The chicken meat is tender and meaty (unlike most skinny chicken that you’ll get from other stall) and juicy ‘taste-burst-in-your-mouth’ with every bite. |
Kedai Kopi Kok Beng
No 38, Jalan Kota,
38000 Taiping, Perak

Tips:
Order both the chicken and char siew. Come early too!
Tasty Or Not?
Rating: 8/10 (8.5/10 with char siew together). A must eat food when in Taiping!
This is a must-eat? The first (and last time) I went there, I ordered chicken on the rice, instead of chicken on a different plate, as this will cost more. Normal price for a plate of chicken rice like this, as average Taiping prices go, would usually amount to RM3.80. Some places are even more competitive and would price it lower.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, let me express my feelings. Chicken rice doesn't take a genius or artist to create. They are very common and can be found ALL OVER TAIPING. Most of them are very tasty, as they are all smothered in Ajinomoto. In fact if you're not too shy around the kitchen, you can very easily learn how to make your own chicken rice.
Back to the story. So my plate of rice arrived. One quick look and I knew something was wrong. There was not only chicken, but also charsiew, both served in a different plate. I only ordered chicken, no charsiew. And I wanted it on top of the ric, to keep the price down. So they took the plate back, and came back the way I ordered it. Everything was fine, I thought. But then came time to pay for it. Total was 5.50. My hair stood up. 5.50 is the kind of price you pay at mamak stalls, where they'd overcharge going by your skin colour. This place overcharges because they are REPUTABLE, THANKS TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER, AND ONLY GO IN THANKS TO WORD OF MOUTH, such as THE KIND FOUND ON THIS PAGE.
There are so many places to eat chicken rice. Sorry, but Kok Beng is not one of them. They got my order wrong, the chicken is tasteless, and the price is similar to mamak's. I'm not impressed by the chili sauce either.
