Yummy! Where to find the best dim sum in Penang? |
After an exhausting search for some decent dim sum in Penang, I ended up at Sungai Dua (just behind Nasi Kandar Subaidah, read:
Nasi Kandar SUBAIDAH, Sungai Dua, Penang: The Wait...Till 10.30pm/ opposite Fried Rice King, read:
Fried Rice King @ Wah Li Fried Rice And Coffee Shop, Sungai Dua, Penang: Famous, Cheap, Fast And Delicious Pai Kut Ong Fried Rice!). All signs point to a new 'ho jiak/ delicious food' discovery, especially when I saw all the tables there were fully occupied. However, scenes of people queuing up and waiting behind each tables, commonly seen in famous dim sum restaurants in Ipoh, are still not seen here yet.

Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant @ Bandar Baru Air Itam |
Dim sum is a Cantonese term for a type of Chinese dish that involves small individual portions of food, usually served in a small steamer basket or on a small plate. Going for dim sum is usually known in Cantonese as going to 'drink tea/ yum cha. (Source: Wikipedia)

Multiple varieties of dim sums in various colors. |
Since this restaurant is self service, I found myself a small table, ordered my favorite tea, 'ti kuan yin' and went to grab a few 'metal' steamer baskets. I took the usual har gao (shrimp dumpling), siew mai (pork dumpling) and crispy fried prawn dumplings. Between sipping my hot brewed tea and eating all these bite-size dumplings, pure delight, man!
|
More dim sums! My camera just couldn't take all in one shot, or else all you can see is tiny little dots, haha. |
|
Har gao/ prawn dumplings. Smooth on the outside and seafood sweetness inside, with 2-3 small-to-medium sized prawns in each dumplings. |
|
Siew mai/ pork dumplings. Appearance-wise, failed! Lousy preparations = no appetite! If this prolongs, I don't think it can achieve the 'best' dim sum status for long. Maybe can just be 'jaguh kampung', best in Sungai Dua only? How about the taste? The pork taste a little bland if compared to those famous dim sum restaurants. Also, these 'kiam sap' portions were just to little. Eating dim sum is already eating little amount. So, I don't want to end up eating even lesser! |
|
Crispy fried prawn dumplings. A little small but packed enough crunchiness, plus fresh 'crunchy' prawns inside brings out the best in this dish. It's also not too oily and a fragrant after-fried aroma |

Another 'bird eyes' view |

After eating the three dishes above, I was still hungry. Ordered carrot cake, freshly made. It tasted delicious, sweet and not too soft/ mushy. However, the amount is too much and there's no 'fillings' at all inside! |
|
Not too expensive, less than RM15 (seen here the order card, not including the carrot cake yet) |

Tasty Or Not?
Ratings: 7/10. A nice place for families to eat and chat in the morning. Light breakfast, but also can be heavy if eaten too fast. So, chew slowly, plus drink some tea together and the stomach will be warm, full and satisfied.
Maybe you can list out which you have tried and readers can recommend which you have not for a better comparison :). Personally I like the one @ town better :)
ReplyDeletePrice is different compare to the price board. Most of the customer will not bother even if they discover the price differences and Maxim will take advantage out of that. Poor customer service also. When I reach there around 1pm, the employees are busy doing housekeeping and nobody come to serve us. I have to approach the waiter for the food card. I think they are rushing because they want to go home. Before I finish my lunch, the cashier come and chase us to pay the bill. I'm extremely dissatisfied with it. I will never visit again
